The Alpha Ensemble by ORTEC is a modular alpha spectrometry system designed to scale from one to four alpha spectrometer modules, combining the flexibility of the Alpha Duo and Alpha Mega models. Housed in a 19-inch rack or a tabletop enclosure, the Ensemble accommodates any combination of modules, enabling tailored configurations for counting laboratories of all sizes. Each module features high-performance digital signal processing, independent vacuum control, and customizable settings for alpha particle detection over a 0–10 MeV range. Designed for both expansion and convenience, the Ensemble integrates seamlessly with ORTEC software like MAESTRO and AlphaVision for full system control and analysis.
Benefits
The Alpha Ensemble offers unmatched configurability, allowing labs to scale capacity by simply sliding in additional Duo or Mega modules without needing full system replacement. Each channel operates independently with its own detector bias, digital gain, and pulse generator, enhancing both versatility and analytical precision. The system’s integrated vacuum manifold simplifies connection and maintenance, while USB and Ethernet options ensure robust connectivity. Software-controlled pressure regulation, bias voltage, and data acquisition streamline workflows and minimize manual handling. Additionally, the ability to remove and service individual modules without halting the entire system ensures maximum uptime and reduced operational disruption
Limitations
While the Alpha Ensemble provides advanced functionality and flexibility, its modular nature may introduce complexity in setup for users unfamiliar with multi-unit systems. Initial installation requires careful vacuum line integration, and while software control adds efficiency, it also depends on proper system configuration and user training. Although the system supports field serviceability, cleaning and decontaminating individual modules requires technical handling. The optional RCAP (Recoil Contamination Avoidance Process) adds protection but involves additional components, such as coin battery-powered trays, which must be monitored and replaced. Lastly, some features—like wireless Ethernet connectivity—require optional accessories not included by default.
